Description

Well ~forever-girl and I (~chrysocome) finally got a chance to wear our updated steampunk outfits to Sydnova this year. Many things have changed since we first debuted these outfits last year at Melbourne Supanova 2010. There is so much backstory for this original universe of ours, and we hope that one day we'll be able to air a series of photos to match the story.

This photo makes me laugh, because we took it at a random wall on the street on the way to the event - it was so dark and uttery freezing. Yet there's so much symbolism here (thanks ~little-match-girl although I know you didn't intend it!) The shadow in the corner if you're wondering is actually the shadow of a tree. Creeping up on Agon and just touching her. Yet there's a little plant of friendship growing between them... Oh how I love that random little plant.

Construction notes

KADIE BLOODFEATHER - The Flying Vet

This outfit is full of layers and details. At the base we have what is fondly called "the pirate shirt" which comes from my mother's 80's wardrobe, a black corset top which has been part of my wardtobe for years, and a brown skirt which came from an op shop (thrift store). The boots are the ones I wear for work. These are the bought items of this outfit.

The little vest was made with some help from my mother, around 2009 when my interest in steampunk began and long before I was game enough to sew clothes on my own. The over-dress was my design, again brought to life by my mum.

I sewed the bracers and side pouch. I have a tonne of little gadgets there which I made from bits and pieces at home - including lego, pieces of a radio, and souvenirs from my workplace (a vet clinic). Some things of note include the stethoscope made from a (still working) set of headphones, numerous syringes (made from disposabe microchip implanters) on my belt, and the laser scalpel and suture cutter on my left bracer (Bionicle love). Not shown are the little tools on the side pouch. All of my gadgets have a legitimate purpose. Notes on the props themselves will be posted later with their individual photos.

A few more recent additions include the doctor's bag, again picked up from an op shop, and though I ran out of time it will eventually bear a steamed up version of the veterinary logo. Finally, I tried my hands at hair falls which were originally for another project, but we realised it added some sass to this character and decided to keep it. It is made from a number of things including kanelakon hair, a dozen types of wool, and lots of adornments like ribbon and pipes and things.

I'm happy with where this outfit is at and one thing I love about steampunk is how much I can change the outfit around. I would like to say I'm about finished with making it, but I guess it's one of those outfits that never stops evolving.
